The Big Social Media Shift: Why YouTube Deserves Your Attention

Writer: Christen KinardChristen Kinard

There’s been a lot of movement in the social media world lately—users jumping ship, new platforms gaining traction, and familiar ones facing uncertainty.

But the evolution of social media is nothing new. We’ve seen shake-ups like this before, and we’ll see them again.

So how do you decide where to invest your time and resources—without getting caught up in the drama or adding more work to your already full plate?

The best way I’ve found to predict trends isn’t by tracking headlines—it’s by watching where content creators go. And right now, they’re moving back to YouTube.

This makes sense. YouTube is stable, highly searchable, and offers multiple ways to engage an audience:

  • Full-length videos allow for depth and connection.

  • YouTube Shorts tap into the demand for short-form content.

  • Community features like comments, live streams, and posts keep conversations going.

For churches and nonprofits, this isn’t about chasing trends. It’s about building a presence where people already are—and will continue to be.

If the past decade has taught us anything, it’s that platforms come and go, but meaningful, well-placed content lasts. YouTube is one of the few places where a video made today could still be discovered and watched months or even years from now. That kind of longevity is rare in digital communications.

So if your organization is deciding where to focus in this ever-changing landscape, consider this: where are people putting their creative energy? Right now, a lot of them are choosing YouTube. And that’s worth paying attention to.
